Number One:
I paid good money for it!
So you have some pale blue eyeshadow in your makeup drawer that you can’t part with even though it is six years old and you never wore it because it made your eyes itch.
TIME TO TOSS!
Number Two:
Someone gave it to me!
My mom kept most of the greeting cards she received in a big cardboard box. When asked why she kept all those cards, she replied: “Because people gave them to me.” So will you keep all your cards in a box for this exact reason?
TIME TO TOSS!
Number Three:
My grown children may want it after I die!
In your mind, you may be thinking that those lovely but never used china teacups that are taking up valuable space in your cupboard will be a treasure your children will want someday. Well, why don’t you ask them and see what they say? If the answer is no:
TIME TO TOSS!
Number Four:
It may come in handy someday in my future!
You have two big boxes down in your basement full of old toys from when your now-adult children were tiny. They have been there for thirty years. You are waiting for the day you have grandchildren and think they may want to play with them. If these future grandchildren visit, have them bring a small bag of toys with them!
TIME TO TOSS!
Number Five:
I may suddenly like to iron clothes!
You are retired and don’t wear fancy clothes that need ironing anymore. But you hang onto that lacy blouse that takes an hour to get the wrinkles out because it is so lovely. It has stayed on the hanger for five years now. Why? Because you hate to iron.
TIME TO TOSS!
In Conclusion:
Time to face the facts, your space and time are valuable commodities.
You need to release things the things you no longer use. You may not want to toss these items in the trash, but donate or give them to someone who can use them.
Do it now, not later! Your future self will thank you!
What are you hanging onto that you now think you will toss?
