Yes, the photo shows me on top of my kitchen counter. I did it to illustrate a point.
I have a new saying to share with you today. It is called “Getting Back to Baseline”.
I borrowed the saying from a surgeon who spoke to us after my husband’s two surgeries last Thursday. He said my husband would probably take a while to get back to “baseline”, meaning back to where his body was before the surgeries.
I thought about that saying and decided to apply it to my home’s condition.
Sometimes I create messes and don’t pick up after myself when I should. I think we would all do better if we got our homes back to baseline at the end of every day.
In other words, don’t carry yesterday’s mess into your new day!
I think it best to concentrate on these three things:
One: Your Clothes:
Either hamper it, hook it or hang it! And put your shoes away as well.
Two: Your Kitchen:
This is the “workhorse” room in your house. Things can get pretty messy if you don’t concentrate on picking up things after you prepare each meal. You don’t want to reach the state of overwhelm and not be able to get things back to baseline at the end of your day!
Three: All Your Horizontal Surfaces:
Keep your surfaces clear of clutter: your dining room table, your desk, your nightstand, your dresser tops, your bathroom and kitchen counters, the top of your cupboards and refrigerator, etc.
If you leave these surfaces messy it will create mental clutter and you don’t want that.
Clutter attracts more clutter!
The big issue I have lately is piling things on top of my washer and dryer.
Then when it comes time to do my laundry, I have the additional task of clearing the way to load my washer and then putting the dried clothing somewhere while I fold and hang my clean clothing.I am getting better and with some practice, I will develop the habit of keeping these surfaces cleared!
Try getting to baseline at the end of every day! Have frequent pick up times or you will reach the state of “overwhelm” by the end and be too tired to deal with the messes you’ve created.
Keep practicing and you’ll get there. You will soon reach the point where you can’t stand things out of place.
Develop this good habit and your future self will thank you!
